How To Pick The Perfect WordPress Theme For Your Blog

November 8th, 2008

WordPress is a great blogging tool. It makes blogging easy and has plenty of powerful features as well. But before you can jump in, you need to pick the right theme; you need to decide how your blog will look. This is a critical decision because the look of your blog will play a big part in its success.

A WordPress theme is what determines the look of your blog, like a website design. And it’s not easy to pick! There are hundreds and hundreds of them…and some are definitely much better than others.

The theme you pick is essential to your blog’s success. First impressions are key, and a visitor’s first impression to your blog will be largely dictated by the theme.

Here are 4 things you should think about to help guide you through the process of picking the best WordPress theme for you:

1. Your blog’s subject matter is key. What’s it about? Really, the content of your blog should strongly influence the look of your blog. For example, it would make sense for a corporate/business blog to look similar to your existing website. A blog about partying should be colorful and exciting, while a blog about yoga or meditation would have a completely different feel.

2. Do you want to make money with the blog? Google AdSense is the most common way of doing this, you see these ads everywhere. And, some themes are better suited for using Google AdSense than others. Of course, there are other ways of making money from your blog - affiliate marketing, selling text links, Amazon, etc.

Not everyone wants to make money from their blog, but if you do, here’s some tips:

  • 3-column themes (particularly with 2 columns on the left or right side) are becoming more popular. Part of the reason is that they provide a lot of space for advertising above the fold (above where a user has to scroll to see content.)
  • Ads that are above the fold typically do better. So pick a theme with plenty of space at the top to include advertisements/sponsored links.
  • While ultra-simple themes might be quite vogue they often lack the space needed for proper advertising.

3. Your technical know-how is important. Most WordPress themes are quite easy to use right “out of the box” but there are some themes definitely geared to beginners and others aimed at experts. Your skills in HTML and even in coding with PHP may play a factor in your successful use of a given theme.

Some themes come better equipped with instructions; so take a look after downloading a theme to see if there’s any advice or information in the files that you’ve download.

If you’re a beginner look for contact information and/or an active community around the theme (like a website or forum.)

Quick Note: Make sure your theme supports the version of WordPress that you’re running. Some themes might only work with a later version of WordPress (2.0+) but you might still be on an older version of the blog software.

4. Don’t forget to test the theme thoroughly! Once you’ve found a theme you like, at least do the following:

  • Write a few sample posts. Vary their length and style to see how each looks. Try including some images as well. On occasion when you start experimenting with the positioning of images you might see it actually breaks the theme.
  • Submit some comments. Comments are important to blogging so try this out and make sure you like how they’re formatted.
  • Make sure you click on a few posts to look at them individually. Click on the category names that you’ve setup as well to see what those pages look like. Generally speaking, try and click throughout the blog because when you first setup a theme or see one you like online it’s not going to be showing you everything.
  • In the WordPress Admin go to the Theme Editor and look at a few of the files listed there. The idea is to just get a feeling for what the code looks like - how well written it looks - because once you start editing that code you’ll want it to be as neat as possible.

Remember, you can always change the theme on your blog, but you want to get it right the first time, if you can. Do some research, look around, find examples of themes you like in use and always test as much as you can.

Once you’ve found a great theme and started editing it you won’t want to get away from it; and that first impression for visitors to your blog is going to help guarantee your success!

Discover the Best Way to Avoid Internet Marketing Information Overload and Guru Confusion

November 7th, 2008

One of the biggest maladies facing internet marketers is disseminating all the information and half-truths being delivered by some of the marketers marketing to other marketers.

There is an incredible amount of marketing-related information to be learned when starting your internet business. Because there is so much information out there, there are many different versions of the truth about certain subjects and methods.

Even if you did pay attention to and follow many of the better-known marketers and adhered to their methods, frustrations with business tend to make people think there’s gotta be an easier way.

For example, let’s use a person who is following the Adsense Guru Joel Comm to learn how to make money with Adsense. Let’s also assume that this person experiences momentary frustrations in their quest to make money with this method of online monetization…

What do you think will happen to this person when they get the following email in a moment of frustration:

Adsense is Dead, free report reveals why…” ?

A momentarily frustrated marketer gets the free report, see that method XYZ is supposedly better than doing Adsense, reads the report, believes what it says, and loses their focus, sometimes permanently.

Who’s right, Joel Comm or the guy giving away a report report depicting another method that HE/SHE deems is far superior to Adsense? They’re both probably telling the truth for the most part. Joel Comm wouldn’t do Adsense if it wasn’t working for him, and the “other” marketer obviously has a reason to believe that “Adsense is dead” in his/her opinion.

  • So, who are you supposed to believe?
  • What are you supposed to beleive?
  • How can you reduce your confusion?

Can the essential knowledge be broken down into a few simple ideas?

Well, read on, because I want to tell you a story about how a high school homework assignment that I did a long time ago can help you get through information overload and guru confusion.

When I was in high school many, many, many moons ago, I was given an assignment by one of the brothers there (this was a Catholic school run by the Xaverian brothers).

The assignment was this:

Write about all the major religions, what their core beliefs are, what they call their Deities etc….

So, I went ahead and eagerly did this assignment because I was always curious about other major religions and what they were all about. For the sake of clarity we’re going to treat different religions and marketing methods as being different schools of thought, and the reasons for this will become apparent later on. So for now, when you read “school of thought” I’m referring to religions, marketing methods, philosophies, etc…

After researching the major “schools of thought” around the world I came to a few conclusions: Almost all of the major ones have the same underlying principles and ideals swathed in different ceremonies, symbols, rituals, and so on…

Almost all the major schools of thought put forth in their tenets that:

There is a higher power/source/entity/deity/being etc…You should be good to your fellow “man” There are rewards for following the WAY.

The most surprising thing that I learned from doing this assignment wasn’t that all these schools of thought had the same basics teachings, but that:

The most common underlying unforeseen benefit not talked about in these “schools of thought” is the sense of community and involvement regular practitioners get from being involved.

When you feel like you’re a part of something, you never feel alone or abandoned. You become more stable since yu need some sort of consistency to be a regular practitioner of anything, right?

When you gain consistency with trying a marketing method, you gain a deeper understanding of the method, and a belief system evolves. Some people have a belief system that is unshakable, and this is comparable to having an unshakable focus.

Now, back to Internet Marketing Information Overload and Guru Confusion:

If you receive an email that detracts and derails you from working on your current project, then you really don’t believe in what you’re doing, which is why you’re susceptible to “program-hopping, or “school of thought hopping” over to doing something else.

However, if you read that type of email and ignore it, then you’re obviously pretty stable and consistent. You have a much better chance of succeeding with your current project and your business as a whole than those who are more migratory in their beliefs.

So, what should you do to remain on target and to keep on track?

Well, remember what I wrote above, that the major schools of thought all have the same basic themes wrapped up in different “cloaks” of symbols and rituals. The most important concepts are the same, but when people focus on the “less” important differences, this is where they get lost in life and business, and where doubt and persecution begins (an example would be saying that MLM or Adsense is Dead, a scam, it doesn’t work) etc…

If everyone adhered to the same barebone basics of their schools of thoughts (marketing methods), and minded their own business, then more people would be more happy.

Realize that sticking to one marketing method is your key to online success! If you can master the basics and become a regular practitioner of those basics, all else will follow. Remember, the #1 benefit that all regular practitioners receive is the sense of community and an added measure of stability to their lives.

When it comes to Internet Marketing, stick with what you’re doing, and believe in it enough to make it come to a worthwhile conclusion for yourself. The benefits are endless, and you will achieve great peace of mind and Focus once you do this.

With focus, comes achievement

  • With achievement comes a sense of satisfaction with your progress.
  • With progress comes results.
  • With results…stability…focus, clarity,
  • No more information overload, since your focus is what drives it away
  • No more confusion because you believe in what you’re doing.
  • ADD-ON to this post.

I was listening to a documentary interview about education a few years ago and I remember what this educator was saying about the mistakes he made during his years as one of the most highly-esteemed educators in his area.

He was absolutely chagrined at all the mistakes he made when it came to the methods he used to get children to behave. During his years as an educator, he was deemed an expert by others in his field while he was making all these mistakes!!!

HE was the expert all others looked up to. HE was the “Education guru” at the time.

He produced a good example of the kind of mistake he made time and time again while others were busy praising him as the “cat’s meow” of education..

On many different occasions, a student, usually a young boy, was sent to his office because they were acting up in class, unable to focus, sit still, pay attention, whatever…

The very first thing he did to these students when they entered his office was to tell them to have a seat, and to….yeppp… sit still and pay attention.

That was Mistake #1 right there…

This well-respected educator was faced with someone who couldn’t sit still AND pay attention, so in order to address this problem, he made them sit still and pay attention!

Pretty stupid, when you think about it…but nobody questioned him because he was the “education guru”

In the documentary he said he realized later on in his career that what he should have done in these types of situations was invite the student in, and let them stand, walk, pace back and forth, or do pretty much whatever their body and hormones were compelling them to do at the time.

He saw that he was dealing NOT with disciplinary problems, but biological issues so he let these students stand, pace, sit and stand, sit and pace…whatever, and he got more out of those meetings.

When trying to remove information overload from your mindset, you really can’t go against what is happening to you, those external forces of email, and differing information from the “gurus”, but what you can do is treat the issue at it’s basest level.

There’s a really good video on a blog somewhere that is 1-hour long and it shows you how to dump all your ideas out of your head, and how to clear your mind to achieve focus. But if you could devote all that time to working on your focus, then you’d already be focused, now wouldn’t you?

Sending people who require help with focus to watch an hour-long video is akin to having a student who can’t sit still take a seat and then lecturing them.

The real path to focus is to find something you believe in that causes all other distractions to fall to the wayside.

People often advise the beginning marketer to NOT focus on money, but on developing systems and sites that work.

Rigghhttttt…. So, if you’re laid off, you’re not supposed to worry about money, or progress, or results, but instead, worry solely about setting up a good online empire?

“Don’t worry about it! Focus on something else instead, don’t let it bother you” etc…

In a way that’s good advice since the only way to remove worry is to remove the cause of it.

But you can’t tell someone to stop worrying about money or progress or results when their mortgage is due, now can you? The only way to remove the worry is to produce results, otherwise the buried concerns are still there, lurking, and coming to a boil unless something happens, soon…

Whatever your business is lacking, don’t treat the symptoms, treat the disease.

Believe in what you’re doing, apply consistent effort to it, and wait for the results.

If you’re doing the right things, then progress and satisfaction will ensue.

Thanks for reading this, I truly hope it serves you well to some degree.

Affiliate Marketing - The Difference Between Prospect And Customer

November 5th, 2008

If you are doing an online business, it will be very important for you to know the difference between prospect and customer. You know that it is important to build your own list if you want to have a successful business. The question that I want to ask you is what kind of list should I build?

To answer this question, you will have to understand that prospects are people who have joined your list irregardless on whether they have purchased the product or not. If you are directing traffic to your opt in page and you offers them a free report etc if they join your list, you will be building a prospect list.

Prospects are people who have already purchase the affiliate products that you have recommended. You would want to build a list of prospects as they are already willing to take out their credit card and purchase the product. This list is crucial as they are buyers which mean you will be earning from your business.

In most of the affiliate marketing business model, most of the people that join your list will become your prospects first before becoming a customer. You will do your job by giving them good value, building a good relationship with them so that you can convert more prospects into customers.

Thus, the efforts in separating the customers from your prospects list will be beneficial to you as you will have a instant list of buyers whenever you want to promote some affiliate product. Stay focus on getting the prospects, converting them into customers and build a customer list will be the wisest decision that you can make for your online business.

Thinking About Making Extra Money With AdSense - Don’t Make These 3 Mistakes

November 4th, 2008

One way people start of with in making extra money online is the Google AdSense program. If this is the path you plan to follow, then we’ve included 3 mistakes to avoid to make sure you begin on the right track.

1. When starting out it’s natural to want to plaster your website with the maximum amount of ads allowed. Think about how annoyed you are when you visit a site like that though … it’s a sure fire way to make a visitor instantly click the back button. Your job is to provide useful unique content with the ads being complimentary not overpowering.

2. Dont make the mistake of not blending and matching your ad colours with your websites text and link colours. Blending the ads into your existing content by using the same colour scheme usually yields a better click through rate and you should be making extra money in record time. You want your AdSense ads to appear seamless and part of your content not stick out like an sore thumb and begging to be clicked - it usually has the opposite effect.

3. Many beginners miss out on great ad placement by not having link ads above or below their navigation menu. It looks good, unobtrusive and works well with the layout. It’s so simple yet can prove to be very rewarding.

These are just a few techniques to implement but there are many more. Ebooks and courses exist to help you with the AdSense program and/or other ways of making extra money online.

Are you ready to actually start making extra money online? I have reviewed a course that has helped me greatly. Discover what it can do for you in my Profit Lance Review.

November 4th, 2008

Affiliate marketing networks are busy inviting the web site owners to sign up for their programs. Other than affiliates, the networks are eyeing on the merchants and advertising agencies located in different parts of the world. Their reach and presence can be felt at a global level.

When it comes to marketing, affiliate marketers are the most unorthodox and the most aggressive. The tools and techniques they have been using gives you an inspiration as to what level the business can go. Beginning with plain texts and web site links, they have come a long way to demand their own share in the market. A similar phenomenon is being observed among affiliate marketing networks.

To increase their reach and penetration, affiliate marketing networks are looking for new markets in the world. Fortunately, countries in Asian and African sub-continents offer as the best destinations. The concept of affiliate marketing is still new in these countries and by creating a level of awareness, the industry is expected to grow manifolds.

In addition, many affiliate networks have cut down their overhead charges and commissions. By connecting the resources scattered through out the world with that of the demands, the overall costs have been reduced and effective business services have been delivered.

The fact gives one more dimension to the vertical growth of affiliate business in the industry. Such networks prove to be helpful as they are aware of critical problems that publishers and advertisers often have to face.

What is interesting is that the networks have to promote their own affiliate programs. Affiliates sign up to promote the business of the advertisers and the network first promotes its own program and then assigns the promotional tasks to the affiliates.

How To Keep Customers Coming Back For More

May 6th, 2008

Developing a relationship with your online customers is much more challenging than developing a relationship with customers in a traditional brick and mortar storefront. In a traditional brick and mortar storefront, sellers often have the opportunity to greet customers personally, lend a helping hand, and answer any questions they may have on the spot. Personal interaction allows sellers to gain insight as to a customer’s unique personality, interests and needs.

Assessing personal characteristics and needs is much more challenging in the online environment. That is why it is so critical for an online business to establish trusting and enjoyable relationships with customers. The most important part of building loyalty requires having contact with your customers. If you supply customers with an easy and clear way to contact you then you will definitely be in the right direction. Contact can be established through a variety of avenues, including an email address, post office box and telephone number. The more options you provide your customers, the more likely they are to be satisfied and contact you in the event of a problem or question.

To a degree, online business still has many rising an eyebrow while seeking some degree of confidence in regards to trust. In order to accomplish this customer will usually search for an “about us” page which should describe your history and mission statement. Online customers are much more likely to frequent a provider if they feel they know something about the provider they are working with. This will allow you a way to connect with your customer regardless of the fact that you have never met.

When you design your website it should be done with your target audience in mind. If your target audience is broad then you will have to address all of their needs by presenting information in several different ways. If however, your target audience is very small, you can work to focus your website on the unique needs of the population you are serving. If your target group is one particular niche then you should become as familiar with that niche as you possibly can. Design your website around that.

It is an absolute must that you offer quality customer service when building your online relationships. A customer that is well cared for is one that is likely to return to your website again and again. Online customer service entails many different things. One of the best things you can do for customers is providing a website that is easily navigated. Customers will appreciate a site that is to the point and easy to maneuver. The good news is that if you do deliver superior customer service then you will have happy customers that will spread the word. The bad news is that if you do not provide great customer service you will have unhappy customers and even worse, bad news spreads a lot faster than the good news.

Make sure that you are providing your customers with the best product or service possible. This helps build loyalty, and will keep customers coming back over and over again. Make your customers feel appreciated and you will soon reap the rewards of repeat customers.

Do You Enough About Online Business Contracts?

May 6th, 2008

Business today is much more highly revolutionized and advanced than we could ever imagine. There are many companies which can help you in many aspects of your business. These companies are specialized in translating all aspects of your business activities into the standards of today.

These websites are the platform for industry players and information technology experts to present high class services in the business execution process. Talk about general business practice and you will be thrilled to discover what specialized companies can do for your business. Time they say is money, in this context however, most business needlessly kill time at the expense of their own profitability. It is all carried out in the phase of spending more than necessary quality time going through the complexities of carrying out the paper work processes of entering a business contract. The sad reality is that, cumulatively, the long paper work involved in business practices only serves to swell the operational costs of any business establishment. In the light of the foregoing it is pointless for any progress minded business entity to remain glued to the costly obsolete business practices too much paper work.

The most credible alternative is to switch to electronic online system of contract ratifications and implementation. This can be carried out with the guarantee that the existing legislative atmosphere fully sanctions the process. This is just where electronic transactions can be relied on, in view of the fact that it is the simplest, fastest and surest way to get your contracts start working for you.
